Proverbs Riddle

I am big, I am small.

Sometimes I have many pieces, sometimes one piece is for all.

I can live for a very long time,

And I can die in a very short time.

I am a chameleon, a virus, a lion, a snake, a fox.

Sometimes I am your friend, but mostly I am not.

The more widely I am spread,

The less likely that I will be dead.

When written about on paper, I am widely read.

I am often regarded as truth, though I am not.

Whenever I am talked about, it makes people stop.

Sometimes I move slow, sometimes I move fast.

No matter what the speed, I can usually out last.

Though I am important in how I am cast,

I often change from the first to the last.

Often my course moves from mouth to ear,

And often to the source I am like a spear.

What am I?
